Just outside Yerevan, in the town of Vagharshap (where the Echmiadzin cathedral is located), there is anoter marvel I foolishingly missed last year. The Zvartnots (Զվարթնոց, "celestial angels" in Armenian) cathedral.
Built by the Katholicos Nerses III between 643 and 653, it was destroyed by an earthquake in 930. When I visited it the weather was rather rainy, but it didn't detract from the beauty of the place. If anything, it added a layer of melancholy, and who am I to refuse it?
Flowers all around give an inner sense of peace to the area. They are everywhere and beautiful.
