Not far from Yerevan, close to the village of Artashavan, lies a magical place. It is the Armenian alphabet monument, built in 2006 to celebrate 1600 years from its creation, by Mesrop Mashtot. It's composed of 39 giant stone letters, as many as the actual alphabet.
This above, on the right, is Mashtot himself, presenting the alphabet to Catholicos Sahak Partev. I do not know who's the epic badass dude below, but he looks like he can kick gods asses. Maybe he's also Mashtot in his free time, cracking mountains and burning cities.
The sky didn't look good, from a practical point of view, but the backdrop it presented was awesome. After a brief visit to the monument, we reached Aparan, where we bought some food. I got some bread stuffed with chicken and walnuts and some Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) pastry stuffed with greens. More than thirty greens, according to Tatev! Then we stopped to get some kaghtsr sujukh (the Armenian version of churchkhela) on the way back. By now it was raining, with spectacular lightning falling around us. We reached Yerevan and I got dropped near my Martyros Saryan friend. The statue, I mean. He got the best free wi-fi in town!
