Lake Sevan and Sevanavank

In the Gegharkunik province lies lake Sevan, the largest body of water in Armenia, an otherwise landlocked country. Much larger before, it was drained during Stalin's rule, making Sevan island a peninsula and lowering water level of twenty meters.

This doesn't make it any less spectacular.

 
 
 
 
 
On what was once Sevan island (now a peninsula due to the drain) is Sevanavank (Sevan Monastery), founded in 874 by the daughter of future King Ashot I, princess Mariam. Built as a "penitentiary" for Etchmiadzin monks caught in sin, had a very strict regimen which forbidden, among other things like meat and wine, also youth and women. Wait a minute...
